how many kills for Jack?
Everyone else?
Take it easy - results will be up late next week
Tuesday, February 24, 2009
Wow - A Winner!
My friend guessed it perfect with 1 kill for Jack (Dibaku's guard) and 2 for everyone else! (Sean killing his girlfriend/fellow terrorist aiding twatwaffle, and then Marika in effect killing herself by causing the car crash)
So my friend - all the prizes are yours! Please mail me stephenbrown1980@hotmail.com with your address and I will get your prize out to you by the end of next week (when i have a chance to unpack it). Also - be sure to tell me what team you would like your cards to come from!
I will put a post up for next weeks 2 hour special - it will count as one episode, so make sure your guesses reflect 2 hours of death. And for those of you who don't watch - the previews definitely showed a machine gun battle - so get those body bags ready -- could be a big one!
I wont have cable or Internet at the new place until Tuesday of next week, (same day mlb 09 the show comes out for PS3) so I may not post up the winners until the end of the week. but I promise to do you all a solid - I dont know what the prize is going to be yet - It may just end up being a surprise, but it will be a good one.
Take care and Congrats! All the points for weeks not guessed right will carry over to the end of the year if the season ends and there are unclaimed prizes.

Gifts From Across the Pond
and then subesquently totally forgot about it. Well about a week ago this package came in the mail and I remembered then that he had asked me to put a package together AFTER receiving this one - So here are some quick highlights from what he sent me, and I will be getting his package together later today!
First we have a 1999 Topps Auto card of Mo Bruce - this is a name I have not thought of in years... I just remember him being reasonable touted and then obviously since is a new name for even some Mets fans, he didnt do too much. But I love obscure Mets cards and I really like his auto too.
Next we have a2008 Heritage Mike Pelfrey. I think that Pelf is quickly becoming one of my favorite Mets and not for his play on the field (of course that helps) but its for being just a big dork. Lately in spring training he has been caught wearing a helmet due to his recent flipping of a golf cart, and has been relentlessly teased by teammates for crying at the end of Marely and Me (The dog dies). I like Big Pelf

Body Count Contest
Chris - 1 point
Andy - 1 point
Don - 1 point
Duane - 1 point
2009 upper Deck Series 1 box 2
for other peoples favorites - I know that Chris @ Stale Gum is a big fan of Chase "fuckin" utley, a know a certain lady with a "problem" who likes her Pujols (get your minds out of the gutter!), and Dave is a big fan of Mr. Longoria.
A few more inserts - Reyes for me, CC For thorzul, Chipper for Days, Manny #'d to 99. also, I did not bring up how much I do not like the history subsets -I don't care about what happened, I don't care about some suits bullshit predictions (I know they don't really believe them, but this is a waste of my time). also, I don't feel good having a bunch of cards now of high school kids... just weird to me.

The Most Recent Blog Bat Around - Why I Sat Out
Now of course as much as the next one, I don't like seeing something I paid $80 for all the sudden being sold for $35, but it happens. We all know about those cards from the late 80s and early 90s that carry almost next to no value now. So yes, while that stinks for a lot of us who were hoping to retire off of all those Albert Belle rookies they are now just want list filler. But I have to say I owe my currently being back in this hobby to those boxes of junk wax.
A few years ago I was super bored, went on ebay, and bought a lot that had boxes of 90 Donruss, 87 Topps, 89 Score. and just like that - I was back - It took a while - almost a year and half before I even considered buying new product - which I now do more often than I would like.
I sort of went off topic. I wanted to talk about why I did not participate in the bat around, and while I write this, I realize I probably just should have used this answer for that -- (disclaimer - I really did enjoy reading what everybody had to say on the topic). But for me, I understand that for some people this is their job and this is how they make their money. But the idea of value and hobby for me are counter intuitive - I do this because it is fun. I enjoy looking through the cards, putting them in order, chasing down a set, and all that goes with it. If I get a card thats "worth" a lot of money - it goes in the same box as my Hunter Pence rookie - sure one is worth just about nothing and the other could be "worth" a few hundred bucks - but that means nothing to me. These are cards that I will hang on to because I like them - if nothing else, they get to be trade bait if i see some cool Mets stuff someone else has opened.
While its good for some people - it doesn't rub me the right way when I see links to your ebay store on the page. there have been times in the past where I see someone working on a set so I send some cards or sps their way (of course they send something back, so I know I do not have a leg to stand on here) but then I see those cards on E-Bay a few months later. I view it like if you have a dog you need to get rid of - you want to send it to a nice a home where it will be loved - not brought to a puppy option.
I didn't really plan this post out well - I'm just writing off the cuff - and maybe I sound like a jerk off or maybe I've made sense to someone - hopefully it just made a little sense at all to anyone. But to answer the question of what I think is going to be worth having in 10 years - I answer who cares whats valuable so long as you have something that you love and enjoy
2009 Upper Deck Series 1 Hobby Box
Anyway - here are the results from box 1 - i'll show off box 2 tomorrow and also get my want list up. This first group of cards is for all my fellow bloggers - I know I haven't seen as much Upper Deck on the blog scene as Topps, which I feel is okay, since I really like the Topps product better this year (and last year i got totally hard for UD) -so if you haven't seen your favorite players yet - here you go. We've got Granderson for Grand Cards, Martin For the Night Owl, Miller for Mario, Chipper for Dayf and Captain Canuck, Mauer for Gelman, and a few "Linceys" for Bailey.
Next up were my favorite cards from the box, which of course are Met-centric. Of course Wright and Reyes - the centerpieces of this franchise - we have a great photo of L- Millz, My ROY preseason pick Travis Snider, and a few local Binghamton Mets who grew up last year, Nick Evans and Bobby Parnell.

Card Show Goodies
One Dealer had some boxes of singles for sales, one was labeled rookies/Game Used 3/$10
And this is what I pulled from there - We have an 85 Donruss Kirby Puckett. This is man who did nothing half assed - we all know he was a fantastic player who had to retire too young, who also died to young. however, thanks to Sports Illustrated we also know that he was a world class asshole who one time used an electric saw to get through a door that was impeding him from hitting his wife. Baseball has more than its share of these polarizing figures.
Next we have a Sweet Spot classic Will Clark bat card. Nothing bad to say about Will - He and Griffey JR had the best left handed swings of all of their contemporaries - great, great player.
Finally, just because I needed to find one more I took this ugly Topps Gallery Roberto Alomar bat card. whatever.
Now Finally - the purchase that made me happiest
Oh yeah. I have wanted this card since I was 9. $2
Fuck Face MOJO! I kinda hate myself now.
Also - I just wanted to give a quick shout out to Dan @ Grand Cards for being a great trade partner. He sent me a bunch of cards for my 07 Topps UH set for a few Grandersons and a card I did not yet own, the Galaragga GU card from 08 Topps - He was super patient when it took me way longer than expected to secure the card from my buddy who was the owner - so everyone release your Granderson's to Dan and he will take care of you.

So let it be known I thank you and I am grateful. If you have any lists or anything like that I can look through, let me know!
Also a quick thanks to Cliff @ Capewood's Collections for getting me to within 15 cards of my 89 Topps set - if anyone has a box of those kicking around, much love if you take a gander at my list. Take is easy.

Some Notes on pack- I officially hate the ring of honor set. anyone want to trade ring of honors for legends/turkey reds/topps towns let me know- I will only look to keep any mets that appear in that set. I can't complain about any pack that gives me 2 David Price cards and another great young ace Tim Lincecum. the Randy Johnson card looks exactly like a Randy Johnson card should. just after the release with that ugly mane flapping in the wind. Jay Bruce gold cup - makes me think about trading with friends years ago over who would get my Wally Joyhner gold cup rookie... Phil coke - I hope so... he'll probably be good like the 86 Mets. Hunter Pence looks like he is passing a stone. Bob Gibson - one of the greatest all time. love it

30 packs for $15 - 2007 Topps Update and Highlights
Body Count Results - Episode 7
Once again, nobody guessed the exact kill count, so the prize will carry over til next week. There were 2 guesses for 12 kills, but one was closer with Jacks count. they are below.
MMayes of the wonderful 72 Topps blog guessed 2 kills for jack (not with kindness) and 12 overall.
Reader Don guessed 12 kills total, with 4 by Jack.
Since he was closer, he will get a point towards the end of season prize if there is anything unclaimed by imperfect guesses.
Point Tallies
Don - 1
Andy (of the 88 Score Traded/Rookie Blow) - 1
The rookie cards and 100 card team lot will carry over to next week.

Super?
Does anybody really care?
Go Cardinals I guess
Less Of Me
Now when I started this quest I'd said I would do some kind of contest for the first person to say good job and answer a question that I posted.
Question - Who is the player with a mildly dirty name that I featured on my blog twice in one week? this was back when it all first started - so take a look at those archives!
The first person to put the answer in the comments will receive autographed cards from
Greg Cadaret
Shawon Dunston
Steve Farr
Willie Fraser
Greg Harris
These are doubles I have received in my TTM requests that I have to post up, but they are all here and up for grabs this weekend for kind words and a little research. Good luck. First to post answer and words gets the prize!
1 More card to go!
Complete!
To complete my 08 UD baseball Heroes set! He was also kind enough to send me 25 89 Donruss and a few 89 Topps - Thank you so much! anyone with card 118 - I will love you long time.
He was also kind enough to include a small stack of Mets cards including a few Sportflics cards which you can (kinda) see below!
Also - There are 2 wax packs of 1989 Donruss in the package that I will be breaking at a later date!
