Body Count Thread

Here is the thread for next weeks 2 hour long episode. Looks like a bloody one. Prize is yet to be determined, but I will make it good. I'd like to see at least 10 guesses here - even if you don't watch it doesnt matter.... just throw a guess out.

how many kills for Jack?
Everyone else?

Take it easy - results will be up late next week

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Wow - A Winner!

It all goes to MMayes of the 1972 Topps Blog!

My friend guessed it perfect with 1 kill for Jack (Dibaku's guard) and 2 for everyone else! (Sean killing his girlfriend/fellow terrorist aiding twatwaffle, and then Marika in effect killing herself by causing the car crash)

So my friend - all the prizes are yours! Please mail me stephenbrown1980@hotmail.com with your address and I will get your prize out to you by the end of next week (when i have a chance to unpack it). Also - be sure to tell me what team you would like your cards to come from!

I will put a post up for next weeks 2 hour special - it will count as one episode, so make sure your guesses reflect 2 hours of death. And for those of you who don't watch - the previews definitely showed a machine gun battle - so get those body bags ready -- could be a big one!

I wont have cable or Internet at the new place until Tuesday of next week, (same day mlb 09 the show comes out for PS3) so I may not post up the winners until the end of the week. but I promise to do you all a solid - I dont know what the prize is going to be yet - It may just end up being a surprise, but it will be a good one.

Take care and Congrats! All the points for weeks not guessed right will carry over to the end of the year if the season ends and there are unclaimed prizes.

Gifts From Across the Pond

A few weeks ago I agreed to a trade with John of the Pursuit of 80's (ness) blog
and then subesquently totally forgot about it. Well about a week ago this package came in the mail and I remembered then that he had asked me to put a package together AFTER receiving this one - So here are some quick highlights from what he sent me, and I will be getting his package together later today!

First we have a 1999 Topps Auto card of Mo Bruce - this is a name I have not thought of in years... I just remember him being reasonable touted and then obviously since is a new name for even some Mets fans, he didnt do too much. But I love obscure Mets cards and I really like his auto too.

Next we have a2008 Heritage Mike Pelfrey. I think that Pelf is quickly becoming one of my favorite Mets and not for his play on the field (of course that helps) but its for being just a big dork. Lately in spring training he has been caught wearing a helmet due to his recent flipping of a golf cart, and has been relentlessly teased by teammates for crying at the end of Marely and Me (The dog dies). I like Big Pelf
Next we see a few 08 Topps all star rookies - I sometime wonder how they chose the players? were all of these guys Gold Cup Rookies in the past? Is that the obvious connection I never made? I didnt not like when Wiggy got traded, but it opened the door for D Wright, so I guess I really cannot be too upset. I am also very happy to get another one of these Ron Swoboda cards - I hope to get him to sign one TTM.

I scanned Mr Hundley in next because I guess when I was collecting in the 90s I must have LOVED Todd Hundley. When going through some old boxes of cards a few months ago I found a stack of what must have been 80 hundley (lots of doubels) all put together - I dont remember being a Hundley super collector, but maybe I am.... who knew?

Finally, I posted up a few Jose's for my wife. He has always been her favorite Met/Player because "He's fast and funny". I cannot argue

Thank you so much John, your cards will be allocated now!

2008 Upper Deck Timelines Box Bust

So, in the spirit of getting this all done before the move so I can get everything put away properly - this is going to be just a quick show of the 2 shitty hits I got.

who wants them?

I will be getting a want list together - any doubles will be up for trade if there is anyone else out there building this set - lets get together!

Body Count Contest

Not a single person lost their life last night on 24. Duane came closest with a guess of 1 kill by the hands of others - that means he will get a point towards the end of season prize. Here are the standings as they are now

Chris - 1 point
Andy - 1 point
Don - 1 point
Duane - 1 point

2009 upper Deck Series 1 box 2

All right, so here goes box 2 -

for other peoples favorites - I know that Chris @ Stale Gum is a big fan of Chase "fuckin" utley, a know a certain lady with a "problem" who likes her Pujols (get your minds out of the gutter!), and Dave is a big fan of Mr. Longoria.

Next up are a few of my favorites from box 2 - I love the new Hebrew Hammer Ryan Braun, I have a bit of a man crush on Soto thanks to being on all of my fantasy teams last year, We have Wright, Beltran, Santana -whats not to love? And the rest of the homegrown B Mets to make the big club next year Dan "The Irish Hammer" Murphy who means business and John Niese who has sweaty palms!

A few more inserts - Reyes for me, CC For thorzul, Chipper for Days, Manny #'d to 99. also, I did not bring up how much I do not like the history subsets -I don't care about what happened, I don't care about some suits bullshit predictions (I know they don't really believe them, but this is a waste of my time). also, I don't feel good having a bunch of cards now of high school kids... just weird to me.
Finally we have the hits
Elijah Dukes "Inkredible" - trade bait
Aramis Ramirez 2 swatch 144/149 - trade bait - I am an Aramis Magnet on these GU cards
Phil Hughes Quad swatch (w/ 3 stripes) #'d 10/15 - This one I like - a normal one I'd trade right away, but 4 swatches, only 15 made of an over hyped Yankee? if he ever gets his shit together I might be able to turn this into something I really want... so this one goes aside for the time being.

Body Count Thread

I'm gonna leave this up for the week. Let's see if we can someone to take the whole prize

We know the rules yes?

* Rookies
* 100 card team lot
and this weeks addition
2009 Topps Career Best auto of Ronny Pauling
2008 Allen and Ginter Johnny Damon GU bat relic (framed)

all comments must be in before 9pm easterm on Monday

Lets try to get more than 4 people this week - even if you dont watch, throw a guess out there - its worked for Chris!

The Most Recent Blog Bat Around - Why I Sat Out

The idea of value and what will be worth money in this hobby 10 years down the line is a question and that is fundamental to collecting, well to most of us. A lot of us are more than willing when we have that extra money lying around to go down to our hobby shop/ebay store/target etc... and drop some coin for a chance to get that big hit, that last card we need for a set and so on. I'm no different - I've already busted 3 boxes of 2009 product. I've started arranging trades to finish those sets up, and hopefully I will be able to help other people hit that same goal as well.

Now of course as much as the next one, I don't like seeing something I paid $80 for all the sudden being sold for $35, but it happens. We all know about those cards from the late 80s and early 90s that carry almost next to no value now. So yes, while that stinks for a lot of us who were hoping to retire off of all those Albert Belle rookies they are now just want list filler. But I have to say I owe my currently being back in this hobby to those boxes of junk wax.

A few years ago I was super bored, went on ebay, and bought a lot that had boxes of 90 Donruss, 87 Topps, 89 Score. and just like that - I was back - It took a while - almost a year and half before I even considered buying new product - which I now do more often than I would like.

I sort of went off topic. I wanted to talk about why I did not participate in the bat around, and while I write this, I realize I probably just should have used this answer for that -- (disclaimer - I really did enjoy reading what everybody had to say on the topic). But for me, I understand that for some people this is their job and this is how they make their money. But the idea of value and hobby for me are counter intuitive - I do this because it is fun. I enjoy looking through the cards, putting them in order, chasing down a set, and all that goes with it. If I get a card thats "worth" a lot of money - it goes in the same box as my Hunter Pence rookie - sure one is worth just about nothing and the other could be "worth" a few hundred bucks - but that means nothing to me. These are cards that I will hang on to because I like them - if nothing else, they get to be trade bait if i see some cool Mets stuff someone else has opened.

While its good for some people - it doesn't rub me the right way when I see links to your ebay store on the page. there have been times in the past where I see someone working on a set so I send some cards or sps their way (of course they send something back, so I know I do not have a leg to stand on here) but then I see those cards on E-Bay a few months later. I view it like if you have a dog you need to get rid of - you want to send it to a nice a home where it will be loved - not brought to a puppy option.

I didn't really plan this post out well - I'm just writing off the cuff - and maybe I sound like a jerk off or maybe I've made sense to someone - hopefully it just made a little sense at all to anyone. But to answer the question of what I think is going to be worth having in 10 years - I answer who cares whats valuable so long as you have something that you love and enjoy

2009 Upper Deck Series 1 Hobby Box

OK - So last week I grabbed up 2 boxes of 09 UD hobby - I planned on spacing them out a bit more than this - but I am moving in about 10 days which means that my cards need to get packed and my focus most move on for a few weeks - so you may see a post up here or there, but probably not until we are totally settled in the new place - I might schedule up some TTM posts or something - we will see.

Anyway - here are the results from box 1 - i'll show off box 2 tomorrow and also get my want list up. This first group of cards is for all my fellow bloggers - I know I haven't seen as much Upper Deck on the blog scene as Topps, which I feel is okay, since I really like the Topps product better this year (and last year i got totally hard for UD) -so if you haven't seen your favorite players yet - here you go. We've got Granderson for Grand Cards, Martin For the Night Owl, Miller for Mario, Chipper for Dayf and Captain Canuck, Mauer for Gelman, and a few "Linceys" for Bailey.

Next up were my favorite cards from the box, which of course are Met-centric. Of course Wright and Reyes - the centerpieces of this franchise - we have a great photo of L- Millz, My ROY preseason pick Travis Snider, and a few local Binghamton Mets who grew up last year, Nick Evans and Bobby Parnell.

Next up are just a few of the inserts received. No one cares about YSL, no one cares about documentary. I don't care about the Upper Deck Legacy, and I really don't care about these - as far as the insert card goes, Topps totally busted a good one all up on upper decks proverbial face. The OPCs are nice - I'm glad I got Wright, but really - don't care. The Stars of the Game are nice - Glad I got Wright, but really, who cares - and the rivals.. whatever. All but the Wrights are available - I will be pursuing all the Mets from these however, so if you also don't care, keep me in mind for those.

And Finally, the 3 box hits - First we have a triple swatch of Chris Duncan 73/99. Trade block
Brandon Phillips 2 swatch 134/149 - Trade Block
Troy tulowitzki game used swatch and auto 44/99
So, the Tulo I Might hang onto for a while seeing as this is my only card with both a GU and Auto on it - but I am sure eventually if I see a Met I need and someone comes calling for old Troy here, I wont shed a tear to see him go.

Card Show Goodies

I Went to the local card show last Sunday to get some supplies and pick up some more cards towards my Topps inserts -

One Dealer had some boxes of singles for sales, one was labeled rookies/Game Used 3/$10

And this is what I pulled from there - We have an 85 Donruss Kirby Puckett. This is man who did nothing half assed - we all know he was a fantastic player who had to retire too young, who also died to young. however, thanks to Sports Illustrated we also know that he was a world class asshole who one time used an electric saw to get through a door that was impeding him from hitting his wife. Baseball has more than its share of these polarizing figures.

Next we have a Sweet Spot classic Will Clark bat card. Nothing bad to say about Will - He and Griffey JR had the best left handed swings of all of their contemporaries - great, great player.

Finally, just because I needed to find one more I took this ugly Topps Gallery Roberto Alomar bat card. whatever.

Now Finally - the purchase that made me happiest

Oh yeah. I have wanted this card since I was 9. $2

Fuck Face MOJO! I kinda hate myself now.

Also - I just wanted to give a quick shout out to Dan @ Grand Cards for being a great trade partner. He sent me a bunch of cards for my 07 Topps UH set for a few Grandersons and a card I did not yet own, the Galaragga GU card from 08 Topps - He was super patient when it took me way longer than expected to secure the card from my buddy who was the owner - so everyone release your Granderson's to Dan and he will take care of you.

the Rest of the box

So Here's the deal - I really just want to file all the cards and such, but I have this box with all the cards still in wrappers and I Just don't feel like doing it anymore - so what we will do is tell you this.

I got the whole set.

I will just scan in some of the best of rest here.
I had to include Santana and Niese here - total Mets bias. One of the hot rookies from the set Mat Gamel - he needs another T. The Mickey Card is classic and i Love the photo on the Upton Card. Pee Wee Reese was the only Legend Short Print I was Able to pull

Here are some great photos of Milledge and Sizemore making a few web gems. A- Roid. Thats it.

These Legends are easily the best insert Topps has done since I have been back into collecting.
Thanks for reading - next week we will have breaks of 09 UD Series 1 and 08 UD Documentary

2008 UD Baseball Heroes Complete!

Just a quick shout out to my man Gritz!

Last week I got a package that included card #118 Chien Ming Wang to complete my set - All cards are now officially paged in the same book as my 08 Goudey set and it brought me peace to look through them! Sorry I cannot thank you by name as the emails have been deleted and the label the shipping store put on the package covered your return address and name! So let it be known I thank you and I am grateful. If you have any lists or anything like that I can look through, let me know!

Also a quick thanks to Cliff @ Capewood's Collections for getting me to within 15 cards of my 89 Topps set - if anyone has a box of those kicking around, much love if you take a gander at my list. Take is easy.

Some Notes on pack- I officially hate the ring of honor set. anyone want to trade ring of honors for legends/turkey reds/topps towns let me know- I will only look to keep any mets that appear in that set. I can't complain about any pack that gives me 2 David Price cards and another great young ace Tim Lincecum. the Randy Johnson card looks exactly like a Randy Johnson card should. just after the release with that ugly mane flapping in the wind. Jay Bruce gold cup - makes me think about trading with friends years ago over who would get my Wally Joyhner gold cup rookie... Phil coke - I hope so... he'll probably be good like the 86 Mets. Hunter Pence looks like he is passing a stone. Bob Gibson - one of the greatest all time. love it

Body count Results

Fresh off watching this weeks episode.
Jack had an overall kill count of 5
Everyone else clocked in with 6
This leaves us with a total of 11 kills for the episode.
No one guessed the actual correct amount of kills, thus the prizes of the patch card, the rookies, and the team lot will carry over til next week.
The closest guess this week was from past winner Chris over @ Nachos Grande with a total kill guess of 6. while this was 5 off the actual total, it still gets him a point towards the year end count. Here are those standings
Chris - 1 point
Andy - 1 point
Don - 1 point
Take care until next week and if your a bad dude, stay out of Jack's away - hes a bit trigger happy lately....

TTM Terry Blocker

Here is a 1989 Score card of Terry Blocker that I received in the mail a few months ago. Terry was once a Mets first round pick (#4 overall in the 81 draft). He was eventually traded to the Braves where he saw his most career action but really had no success. A late attempt in his career at pitching saw him pitch 1 scoreless inning for the Braves. He was out of baseball by 1989.

Skills That Blow My Fucking Mind

So - I'm really not too sure on the legitimacy of this video - but I enjoy watching it and if its real its remarkable - if it's not real, I wish I could manipulate video this well (so it's impressive on one of two levels).

enjoy the mystery man.

30 packs for $15 - 2007 Topps Update and Highlights

The next pack out of my repack box from Target was one of those 2007 Topps Updates and Highlights packs with 6 cards. I really was not expecting much from this pack. I am trying to build the set, still need around 100 cards so lets see what I got.

We have Antonio Alfonseca, Matt Desalvo RC, Ubaldo Jimenez RC, Prince Fielder Generation Now, Gil Meche All Star, Magglio Ordonez All Star.
While none of these cards are very exciting, I did need to Alfonseca, DeSalvo, and Jimenez for my set - so not a bad haul at all

Body Count Results - Episode 7

Well, Jack had his most active week so far, with a total of 5 kills. Everyone else clocked in with 10. this leaves us with a total of 15 kills for this episode.

Once again, nobody guessed the exact kill count, so the prize will carry over til next week. There were 2 guesses for 12 kills, but one was closer with Jacks count. they are below.

MMayes of the wonderful 72 Topps blog guessed 2 kills for jack (not with kindness) and 12 overall.

Reader Don guessed 12 kills total, with 4 by Jack.

Since he was closer, he will get a point towards the end of season prize if there is anything unclaimed by imperfect guesses.

Point Tallies

Don - 1
Andy (of the 88 Score Traded/Rookie Blow) - 1

The rookie cards and 100 card team lot will carry over to next week.

Last week there was no winner, although Andy from the 88 Score update blog received a point towards a year end prize if there are still some unclaimed.

The prize that is carrying over is a 100 card lot from the team of your choice.

The prize this week are the following 5 rookie cards

2) Randy Johnson 1989 Score
3) 1989 Topps Craig Biggio
4) 1989 Donruss Curt Schilling
5) 1981 Harold Baines Topps

1) How many Jack Kill
2) How many everyone else kills

All guesses must be in by 9 PM EST

Super?

Right now I am at work and not watching the game.

Does anybody really care?

Go Cardinals I guess

Less Of Me

Well, it's been one month since I resolved to lose some weight. As you can see on the sidebar, when I started all of this I weighed a whopping 339 pounds. I am glad to see that I am now down to 322. that's 17 Pounds for the month - That is a great start towards my goal to be get down to 270 by year end. Let's hope I can keep it up.

Now when I started this quest I'd said I would do some kind of contest for the first person to say good job and answer a question that I posted.

Question - Who is the player with a mildly dirty name that I featured on my blog twice in one week? this was back when it all first started - so take a look at those archives!

The first person to put the answer in the comments will receive autographed cards from
Greg Cadaret
Shawon Dunston
Steve Farr
Willie Fraser
Greg Harris

These are doubles I have received in my TTM requests that I have to post up, but they are all here and up for grabs this weekend for kind words and a little research. Good luck. First to post answer and words gets the prize!

1 More card to go!

Thanks to a reader of mine named Duane - I only need card number

Complete!

To complete my 08 UD baseball Heroes set! He was also kind enough to send me 25 89 Donruss and a few 89 Topps - Thank you so much! anyone with card 118 - I will love you long time.

He was also kind enough to include a small stack of Mets cards including a few Sportflics cards which you can (kinda) see below!

Also - There are 2 wax packs of 1989 Donruss in the package that I will be breaking at a later date!
